Drilling
What the team says...
The Drilling function covers all aspects of Drilling, Completion and Well Services activities on Fairfield’s various assets including the Dunlin Area Asset, Development Assets such as Crawford and Darwin, Joint Ventures such as Clipper South, and in the area of New Business.
The remit of the team is to plan and execute all activities in a safe and efficient manner, to remain incident free, and to demonstrate continuous improvement in well delivery. Since the team’s establishment it has grown rapidly to support multiple activities with a 50-50 split between support of the rig refurbishment of the Dunlin Alpha drilling package and transition to active platform drilling campaign, and detailed planning for Development Asset drilling operations.
The activities of the team typically includes the annual maintenance and repair of platform wellhead and Xmas tree inventory, as well as standalone well services activities to prepare for future drilling activities, remedy well integrity issues, and to improve the performance of wells. In addition, the team is responsible for the Dunlin platform infill drilling operations covering well planning, risk assessment, permitting, daily operations supervision and well close-out, as well as conceptual engineering for the early stages of Field Development – detailed screening to deliver an optimum Field Development plan and balance risks across all disciplines. Also part of the remit is the screening of costs/risks for all potential New Business acquisitions to ensure bids reflect the correct level of technical complexity and operational uncertainty. There is also a requirement to manage the cross asset drilling schedule to optimise functional well delivery in line with individual Asset plans. All of these activities involve regular interface with the Asset, Subsurface, Subsea & Engineering disciplines to ensure all plans are consistent with wider organisational requirements.
The Drilling team has delivered some significant milestones in its short history: An eighteen month Rig Refurbishment project and transition to the first active drilling operations on the Dunlin platform since the 1990’s; first dual ESP completion run into a highly depleted reservoir section on the Dunlin platform; development of a Structural Basis of Design for the Dunlin platform well stock to understand load cases and actions required to ensure the foundation is suitable for life of production wells; two years’ LTI free since start of Dunlin well operations; significant improvement in platform well stock integrity since annual maintenance was adopted by Well Services team; development of a fit for purpose Management System to control all well engineering activities; and development of a Performance Management system to drive the performance culture and continuous improvement into all daily operations.
