The Glein Discovery is located approximately 60 miles (100km) off the east coast of England. Water depth is approximately 24m (80feet).
Awarded in the 26th licensing round to Fairfield and its partner Bayerngas, the Glein area is located in Licence P1746 comprised of blocks 48/11c and 48/12b, and contains two undeveloped discoveries, Glein and Eos, as well as several prospects. All potential targets are close to existing infrastructure, including Perenco’s West Sole facilities (6 km) and LAPS via Malory (11 km).
Background & Exploration History
Blocks 48/11c and 48/12b contain a significant undeveloped tight gas discovery in the Permian Rotliegend Leman Sandstone reservoir, adjacent to the West Sole field. Named ‘Glein’ by a previous operator, the discovery contains 120bcf 2C Resources in an elongate NW-SE steeply dipping fault block and is penetrated by 2 wells, the first drilled in 1977 and the second drilled in 1994. Historically, development has not matured because of the low permeability reservoir, complex faulted structure and relatively low volume of gas initially in place (GIIP). Fairfield’s detailed work on the development of the Clipper South accumulation, along with recent tight gas wells in Ensign and the commencement of production from the Babbage Field, has increased the partnership’s confidence that the reservoir can be successfully developed with modern hydraulic fracturing techniques. Under the 1st term commitment Fairfield has reprocessed existing 3D seismic surveys over the Glein area, to improve the imaging and reduce the GIIP uncertainty and is currently assessing production estimates and development costs so that a field development feasibility decision can be made. Centrica’s Olympus field, discovered in May 2010, lies due east of Glein, and a possible joint development of the two discoveries is currently being studied in conjunction with Centrica.
